August 7: "Enoch Walked with God"
Genesis 5:24
24 Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

Walking with God
1. What it is to walk with God
  • There is privacy
  • There is intimacy
  • There is mutual understanding
2. The Blessings of walking with God
  • We grow in holiness
  • Establish confidence
  • Kept from bad company
  • Given immediate support
  • Broaden view of life
3. How it is to walk with God
  • Guard against what is injurious
  • Watch and pray

August 14: "Asa the Loyal Royal"
1 King 15:9-15
9 In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah, 10 and he reigned in Jerusalem forty-one years. His grandmother’s name was Maakah daughter of Abishalom.

11 Asa did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, as his father David had done. 12 He expelled the male shrine prostitutes from the land and got rid of all the idols his ancestors had made. 13 He even deposed his grandmother Maakah from her position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah. Asa cut it down and burned it in the Kidron Valley. 14 Although he did not remove the high places, Asa’s heart was fully committed to the LORD all his life. 15 He brought into the temple of the LORD the silver and gold and the articles that he and his father had dedicated.

1. Tenacious
  • Exodus 20:3-5
3 “You shall have no other gods before me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
  • Asa destroyed the shrines and expelled the prostitutes; he cut the asherah pole and burned it.
2. Legacy
  • Trendsetter
  • A good father to a good son, Jehoshaphat

August 21: "Phillip the Evangelist"
Acts 8:26-29
26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” 27 So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian[a] eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, 28 and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. 29 The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”

What lesson can we learn fro Philip?
1. Would Philip have preached to those in Samaria  and later to the Ethiopian elsewhere?
  • Experiencing difficult times in forcing us out of our comfort zone can provide opportunities for us to witness for Christ.
2. Have you ever felt God speak to you in regard to moving out of your comfort zone?
  • Philip by listening to God was open to what the Spirit was doing.
3. Would we be prepared to speak to those who are different from us?
  • Philip was prepared to preach to the Samaritans who were half Jew, half Gentile and saw great fruit.
4. Have you met people that are 'not far from the kingdom' who only need an encouragement or word of invitation to become a disciple of Christ?
  • In this situation little sowing is required but the important work of reaping certainly is.
5. When was the last time we asked God for more love, more power, more of the Spirit in our lives?
  • Paul encourages us to be filled with the Spirit continually.
6. Where is your Samaria?
  • To be used of God in evangelism must be prepared for some inconvenience, which includes our comfort zone.

God can also use as like he did to Philip, all we need is humility, obedience, boldness, availability, sensitivity to the Spirit like Philip the evangelist did…

August 28: "Lois and Eunice"
2 Timothy 1:1-5
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,

2 To Timothy, my dear son:

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

1. Eunice committed herself to teach
  • Teach who? Timothy
  • Teach what? Word of God
  • Teach where? Home
2. Eunice remained loyal to her husband
  • By serving
  • By loving
  • By respecting
3. Eunice enlisted her own mother as her support system
  • For guidance
  • For help
  • For improvement
4. Eunice enlisted those Godly people
  • Reinforcement
  • Development
  • Training
